Cape basketball dominates Mountain View in Beach Slam

Vikings fall to Broadneck in final
December 30, 2024

After running the floor and the clock in a 61-24 win against Mountain View High School from Virginia, the Vikings could not find their rhythm and dropped a heartbreaking 57-61 game to Broadneck High School of Maryland in the Beach Slam Classic at Cape Henlopen High School Dec. 28.

The Vikings liked the view on the top of the mountain, with senior Damian Robinson putting in 16 points to lead the home squad. Jameson Tingle added 14, and sophomore point guard Stephen Sivels scored 11.

“We executed tonight,” said Sivels. “We wanted to play Cape basketball and do what we are known for, like staying under control and not letting the pressure get to us. I think we did just that.”

“We really came to handle business,” said sophomore Geordan Downing, who knocked down seven. “We weren’t playing around during this game. We were mature and made good, fast decisions, and controlled the play right from the start.”

“We ran away with it tonight,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “We did a good job with our game plan. We did see some stuff that might hurt us on their film. But we shared the ball, switched well on defense and took them out of their rhythm. We kind of feasted on it. We played unselfish and played the right way.”

The Vikings experienced both the highs and lows, as Cape started out the total opposite in the final of the Beach Slam against Broadneck High School.

After falling behind 19-10 in the first quarter, the Vikings tried to pull closer but fell to a 33-22 deficit at the half.

Broadneck continued to hold the lead with a 15-12 third quarter. The Vikings poured on the pressure and outscored the Bruins 23-13 in the fourth, but simply ran out of time to finish the comeback.

“We came out super flat. We didn’t move the ball well; we didn’t attack well. We just played flat,“ said Re. “We had multiple looks at the rim to tie it up and take the lead. We did scrap our way back in and showed a lot of heart.”

Jameson Tingle led the scoring with 18 points, 10 of which came in the first half to keep the Vikings close. He also snagged nine rebounds while dishing off five assists and blocking three Bruins shot attempts.

Sophomore Stephen Sivels scored 14 while making four steals in 28 minutes of play, while Geordan Downing scored 13 and made two steals in the comeback. Damian Robinson knocked down 10 points, and grabbed five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Braxton Figgs scored four and made three steals.

“We came out in the first half and put up some bad, one-pass shots,” said sophomore forward Tingle. “Last night we hit them, but today we didn’t.”

“Last night we played better as a team,” said senior Robinson. “I feel like tonight we played a little selfish in the first half with a lot of one-pass shots. We played better in the second half, like we played in the last game.”

The Vikings move to 4-2 on the season and will start the new year Friday, Jan. 3, with a home nonconference game against Stephen Decatur.
