The Cape boys’ basketball team scored a impressive 60-49 win over William Penn Dec. 6, in front of a nearly packed house at Cape’s gymnasium.
“For our first game of the year, we played well,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “William Penn is a good team.”
Stephen Sivels scored 18 points to pace the Vikings. Geordan Downing and Jameson Tingle each scored 13, with Tingle snagging 11 rebounds.
“I thought Quardell [Richards] and Braxton [Figgs] battled in the paint and rebounded the ball really well,” said Re. “Our team defense was really good down the stretch. As we get our legs back and get more comfortable on offense, some of the shots we missed will start to go in.”
Richards said first-half mistakes were expected in the first game of the season.
“Once we regrouped during halftime, I feel like we responded well,” he said. “We have one of the hardest schedules in the state, no doubt, but we knew what we had coming for us this year. We are ready to get back to it this Tuesday against Smyrna.”
Figgs said his team played with high intensity and grit.
“Coach Re told us to keep our composure and sure enough the big shots started falling,” he said. “The fourth quarter of that game is what we should look like all the time. I’m really excited for Tuesday versus Smyrna.”
Cape hosts the Eagles at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9.
