Four Vikings scored in double figures in the Vikings’ 79-61 win over Caesar Rodney Jan. 8, and three players scored in double figures in the 61-52 victory over Laurel just two days later, Jan 10.
Braxton Figgs had his best game as a Viking, scoring a double-double of 26 points, 10 rebounds, and blocking two CR shots in the win over the Riders.
Stephen Sivels scored 19 points and dished off nine assists. Lamar McCoy scored 13 points, snagged seven rebounds and helped on four baskets.
Jameson Tingle had 12 points and eight rebounds, and assisted on five plays. Oz Batson snagged six rebounds.
In the win over the Bulldogs, Tingle led the scoring with 23 points while Stephen Sivels tallied 13 and Lamar McCoy racked up 10. Tingle, Figgs and Richards each had seven rebounds in the contest.
“These were good games for us,” Tingle said. “This past week simulated playoff basketball as far as having so many games in a short span of time, and [it] was even better pulling out three wins.”
“Whether we like it or not, we've earned ourselves a target on our backs,” said Figgs. “Teams are playing their best ball against us. CR and Laurel were no cakewalks, and it has honestly made us realize that we still have a lot of improvements to make if we are going to continue to find success through the season. This week holds two conference matchups for us, Milford and Smyrna. It's hard to beat a good team twice in Smyrna. With Milford having some momentum right now, we are just going to play our style of basketball in order to slow them down.”
“Coming off an emotional and physical game like Howard, you are bound to have a letdown,” said head coach Steve Re. “Especially when you have to play three games in a week. We definitely didn’t play our best basketball game vs. CR or Laurel, but we definitely stayed together and were mentally tough enough to pull out two wins vs. very aggressive and athletic teams.
“Braxton had the best game of his career vs. CR, while Jameson, Steve and Lamar continued to be consistent in both games. We need to continue to improve in some areas, get some guys healthy, and get some rest over the weekend as we have two very difficult conference games against Smyrna and Milford this week.
“Laurel was athletic and scrappy. Holding them to 52 points was excellent. We took a solid lead and then gave some of it back in the fourth. However, we shared the ball fantastic and had 20 assists on 22 made field goals. If we continue to play together, we will continue to have team success,” said Re.
