March 23, 2024

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team beat Polytech 20-0 March 22 at Legends Stadium behind hat tricks from Mike Guenther, Jack Schell, Ryan Morgan and Brenner Short.

The game was the season opener for the Vikings. The score was 12-0 at halftime, kicking in a running clock in the second half.

Coach Geoff Shupard: “I thought we played well in the first quarter, but lost some momentum in the second. I was happy with how the guys responded at halftime and put together a good third quarter. We still have a lot of work to do, but the boys are working hard and getting better every day.”

Anderson Smith and Hank Anderson each scored two goals, while Burke Healy, Lucas Stevenson, Braddock Smith and Ronan Presler each scored one.

Assist leaders for Cape were Healy with three, Guenther and Anderson Smith with two apiece, and Jack Huss with one.

Mason Trench and Gus Musika combined for eight saves.

Cape will host the Tatnall Hornets at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 27. Tatnall is coming off a 13-4 season in 2023, losing 13-1 to Wilmington Friends in the second round of the state tournament.

There will be a JV game at 4 p.m., with Cape hosting Stephen Decatur.

Polytech (0-2) will host Wilmington Friends Monday, March 25, followed by Caravel Academy Wednesday, March 27.
