Cape boys’ volleyball is back and better

March 17, 2022

Cape boys’ volleyball head coach Tyler Coupe is looking to improve on the 4-6 record his team posted last year and earn a second trip to the playoffs. The 2021 squad won the first round of the DBCVA tournament 3-0 over Saint Mark’s before falling to Indian River in the second round.

The Vikings have 23 players battling for a spot on the hardwood. Seniors returning to the team are Ethan Shuttleworth, Sal Oronzio, Alex Patterson, Nick Schweitzer, Dalson Case and Noah Windsor. Juniors Odin Potemski and Javier Oquendo as well as sophomore Talan Stephens also make their return to the team.

Assisting this season with head coach Tyler Coupe are Pam Coupe and Dion Lamb as well as volunteer coaches Logan Shuttleworth and Steph Hesseltine.

“We run one unit at practice,” said head coach Tyler Coupe. “Post practice before a match we will decide who will play on varsity and who will play on the junior varsity. Then it will reset as soon as that match is over. Everyone is on the same playing field. The goal is to keep everyone challenged and pushing each other. With a new sport, there is a wide range of skill sets. We believe this is the best way to keep everyone on the same focus of improving each day. There will probably be a handful of kids on the varsity each time and a handful on the JV each time. And that’s fine. This is about progressing and getting better. We’ll do whatever we have to do to get that done.”

Cape will open the season Wednesday, March 23, at home against Concord.
