Bryce Biles looks for an outlet in the freshman victory. The Cape boys’ basketball team battled Dover to the end, but the 2024 DIAA state champs were just a few points better, as the Senators took a 46-40 victory Jan. 24.
Cape’s pressure defense and unselfish offense gave the Vikings an 11-point lead in the second quarter, but missed opportunities allowed the Senators back in the game, and the Vikings went into the halftime break up by one, 23-22.
“We missed multiple opportunities at the rim in the second half where we just couldn’t convert,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “We played our tails off. I can’t be more proud of those guys and way they played, how they played, and the attitude which they played with was phenomenal. They managed and controlled the game and showed a ton of maturity tonight. If we can carry that on for the rest of the season, we will be a very dangerous team. We lost, but I have nothing negative to say. We did everything we worked on and shared the ball very well. We just didn’t finish it.”
Sophomore forward Jameson Tingle tallied 13 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists to lead the Vikings.
“We had chances,“ said Tingle. “I say this was probably one of our most complete games. We played hard from the jump. There were some things that didn’t go our way, but that’s basketball and that happens. We had our chances and can’t blame anything.”
Re was quick to give kudos to his young point guard Stephen Sivels, who had 10 points, three assists and a steal.
“Stephen played very mature tonight,” Re said. “He played 100% and should be recognized for it. He continues to do that for us. He was everywhere and fought hard under pressure.”
“We played hard,” said Sivels. “We wanted this one bad. We have to just move on to the next game and keep playing like that.”
Geordan Downing contributed nine points and three rebounds. Damian Robinson added four points and seven rebounds.
The evening started off with the Vikings freshman squad handing the Senators a 50-37 loss.
Ben Hill led the Vikings with 14 points. Kihara Ngido and Christopher Prince hit for 12 and 10, respectively. Trizton Willey added five. Harlem Johnson, Brody Burton and Bryce Biles also each put three in the book.
