Cape boys’ basketball has a new-old look this season

Re returns to bench
November 23, 2022

Cape boys’ basketball bench will have a familiar look this season, as Steve Re returns to coach the varsity team after a three-year hiatus to coach at Beacon Middle School and watch his son play for the Beacon squad. In his absence, the Vikings have garnered a 17-34 record.

“The timing of it all worked out,” said Re. “Opportunity presented itself and I took it.”

Returning for the Vikings are seniors Trey Leggins, Odin Potemski, Dylan Fannin, Timmy Hitchcock, Drew Zimmerman and Tajear Freeman. Underclassmen who will make an impact are Tyrone Tolsen, Collin Sivels, Kameron Trammell, Jayden Dukes, Damien Robinson and Jack Schell.

Assisting Re on the varsity bench are former Cape all-star Josh Hackney and former Sussex Tech standout Kevin Larkin. Tony Hazzard is coaching the junior varsity, and Ben Ashby is the freshman head coach. Tom Neugebauer is a volunteer assistant.

“We’ve got a lot of depth at guard, and we have two good big guys in Odin and Jack,” said Re. “We’ve got some size and athleticism.”

Re looks to Sussex Tech, Polytech, Dover and Smyrna as the teams to beat in the Henlopen Conference.

“I think we’ll be able compete with all of them,” said Re with a smile.

The Vikings will open the season Tuesday, Dec. 13, when they host Sussex Central.
