Cape district honors volunteer mentor for going above and beyond

April 14, 2026

The Cape Henlopen School District recently recognized Jon Fisher for his outstanding commitment as a volunteer mentor with the Connecting Generations Creative Mentoring program at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School. Over the last three years, he has spent time building meaningful relationships with students and making a lasting impact.

Throughout his time as a mentor, Fisher has consistently demonstrated creativity, compassion and dedication in his work with students. He has a unique ability to form strong connections with his mentees, finding thoughtful and engaging ways to support them and meet their individual needs.

Fisher’s commitment also extends beyond the school walls. Even after two of his former mentees moved on to other schools, he has continued to stay connected, and provide encouragement and support whenever he can.

At HOB, Fisher has developed a particularly strong bond with his current mentee, a student who previously struggled to make connections with others. Through shared activities and hands-on projects, Fisher has helped create positive and memorable experiences. Whether they’re fixing broken school desks together, carving pumpkins or baking pumpkin seeds, Jon’s mentorship has brought joy and stability to his mentee’s school experience. His mentee now looks forward to their time together and trusts Jon as a positive role model and supportive presence.

“Jon has been mentoring students for three years and does a phenomenal job of creating meaningful connections,” said Jessica McLaren, HOB mentor coordinator. “No matter the challenge, he always finds creative ways to engage with his mentees and meet their needs.”

Cape Henlopen School District also extends appreciation to McLaren for her nomination and to the HOB staff for fostering an environment where mentorship programs and community partnerships can thrive. Fisher’s dedication, positivity and heart exemplify the powerful difference that mentors can make in the lives of students.

“Mentors like Jon demonstrate the incredible impact that caring adults can have in a student’s life,” said Stephanie Mastrangelo, district mentor coordinator. “By building trust, showing consistency and creating meaningful experiences, our mentors help students feel seen, supported and valued. Jon’s dedication to maintaining relationships with his mentees, even after they leave the school, truly reflects the heart of what mentorship is all about.”
