Cape district students participate in DelDOT bridge design competition
Students from Cape Henlopen High School, Beacon Middle School and Frederick D. Thomas Middle School took part in the Delaware Department of Transportation bridge design competition held April 10 at Polytech High School.
The Cape High team included Jaxon Clampitt, Jenna Reinhold and Sophia Herrera with advisor Jim Baker of Pilottown Engineering. The students are part of a yearlong internship program with Pilottown Engineering and plan to enter the engineering field after completing their education. The team earned a 12th-place finish out of 28 competing teams.
The Beacon Middle team, BMS Bridges, comprised Emma Lewis, Jack Willmot, Andrew “AJ” Maggitti and Jaxon Ceman, along with advisor Dr. Anthony Carmen, the school’s technology education teacher.
Fred Thomas Middle School had two teams participate. The first included Julia Moore, Sophia Connelly and Casey Carr, and the second was made up of Korban Maedler, Dimitry Christodoulou, Albert Feliciani and Cameron Corrozi. Both teams were advised by tech ed teacher Paul Freel.
Teams who participated in the competition were tasked with researching bridge designs, drafting a concept, building and testing multiple prototype bridges, and then competing in the presentation and bridge testing event. Students were also able to visit with engineering companies and learn about careers in the civil engineering field.
The event is made possible by DelDOT and provides students with hands-on engineering competition experience. It’s specifically designed for those who are interested in the math, science and engineering fields, and encourages students to consider careers in transportation and civil engineering.
