Cape escapes at Caesar Rodney 51-50 for sixth straight win

"Take two and call me in the morning." Deuce at buzzer leaves Riders 1 short

Cape barely got out the door at Caesar Rodney Jan. 6, escaping with a 51-50 victory for the Vikings' sixth win in a row and now sporting a record of 6-2. The Vikings dominated play in the first half, taking a 32-15 led into the locker room.

“That was a good first half of basketball for us; we played with confidence and intelligence,” said a puzzled Cape coach Steve Re after the game. “How we followed that with a second half where we got outscored by 16 points and couldn't relax until the final horn is a mystery. It was like we were in a fight and just stopped punching. The good news is we are getting home.”

The Riders had the ball trailing by three points with nine seconds left to play. They had already scored four three-pointers in the game from three different players, so danger lurked for Cape. And then the Riders drove the lane and took the deuce as time expired.

“I'm sure the play was to kick it out to a shooter but the ball got dumped inside and they scored and the horn went off, ” Re said.

Cape was led in scoring by L.T. Hazzard with 16 and Tyreik Burton with 10. Gekwan Pritchett, 6, and Zach May, 5, helped with big-time points coming off the bench.

The Riders were paced by Savon Farlow with 11 and Collin Moore 10.

Cape next plays at Caravel Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The Riders fall to 2-8 with the loss and host Sussex Tech Friday, Jan. 13.
