Cape field hockey hosts play day

August 20, 2019

The Cape Henlopen field hockey squad hosted its first scrimmage play day of the 2019 season Aug. 17. Fifteen teams from Delaware, Maryland and Virginia played 25-minute games in Cape’s Legends and Champions stadiums. Teams that participated in the scrimmages were Academy of Holy Cross, Appoquinimink, Caesar Rodney, Caravel Academy, Charter, Indian River, James Madison, Lake Forest, Milford, Paint Branch, Polytech, South County, St. Georges Tech, Sussex Central and Sussex Tech.

“I think that the play day went well,” said Cape senior Abby Kane. “It helped us show our weaknesses and strengths as a team, and how we can improve for the season.”

“This play day was all about figuring out where everyone fits on the field and building the team chemistry again,” said Cape senior Cami Smith. “We lost a really strong group of seniors last year and now we are trying to rebuild that, but overall I feel we played well.”

“Today helped us start to feel comfortable playing with each other,” said senior Anna Stancofski. “We are a young team with several new players, and today showed us where we need to improve.”

“A lot of people say we are a young team, but don’t let that fool you,” smiled Cape sophomore attack Noelle Sabbagh. “We are strong and determined and ready to crush it this season.”

The Vikings will host a five-team play day Friday, Aug. 23, that includes Delmar, Tatnall, Wooton High School and Garrison Forest of Maryland.
