The mission for the Cape defense at Smyrna Nov. 6 was to keep the Eagles' point production under the speed limit. School zone is 25, or residential 35 preferable, 55 Route 13 next goal. Smyrna won 60-19, which at least was under the posted limit on the Route 1 bypass of 70.
Cape has a bunch of track-type athletes on the football team and welcomed the challenge of going up and down field trying to match the prolific scoring of the Smyrna Eagles.
“I was excited for the opportunity and looking forward to seeing what we could do,” coach Bill Collick said. “It's not a matter of not knowing what they are doing; it comes down to athlete on athlete. They challenge you with onside kicks and two-point conversions, so either stop them or score with them.”
Cape was close, trailing 24-12 after a Deandrea Sheppard interception and Kolbi Wright touchdown.
Jerry Harden picked off quarterback Nolan Henderson on the Eagles' next possession and the Vikings were calculating: “We score and go for two, then we only trail 24-20, and it’s a new ball game.”
A fourth-down toss sweep hit the hands of Mike Williams then hit the ground and was picked up by Elijah Henderson, who returned it 71 yards for a touchdown.
The score at the half went from a possible 24-20 Smyrna advantage to a 30-12 lead.
Smyrna’s Will Knight went 58 yards on his first carry of the third quarter and it was throttle up exit velocity for the Eagles, who accelerated to a 60-19 victory highlighted by four Knights touchdowns and three touchdown passes from Nolan Henderson, including strikes to Brandon Bishop for 63 yards and Donte Ritchie for 49 yards.
Mike Williams had touchdown runs of 12 and 5 yards for the Vikings.
Smyrna secured the Henlopen Conference Northern Division championship for the first time since 1969.
Cape (5-3) will close out the season Friday, Nov. 13, at Sussex Tech. The Ravens are 7-2, having lost Nov. 6 to Salesianum 42-7 and to Smyrna Oct. 17, 42-0.
