In late fall, Bill and Joan Byrne from Lewes went on an educational and cultural cruise around the beautiful island of Cuba. Here they are pictured with their Cape Gazette in front of the monument dedicated to the men and officers of the United States Army killed on San Juan Hill on July 1898 in Santiago, Cuba.
According to Wikipedia, The Battle of San Juan Hill, also known as the battle for the San Juan Heights, was a decisive battle of the Spanish–American War. The names San Juan Hill and Kettle Hill were given to the location by the Americans. This fight for the heights was the bloodiest and most famous battle of the war.
It was also the location of the greatest victory for the Rough Riders, as claimed by the press and its new commander, Theodore Roosevelt, who eventually became vice-president and then president. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001 for his actions in Cuba.
