Cape Gazette rings in the New Year with Big Ben

March 10, 2017

Cape Gazette readers Russell and Patricia Stiles of Rehoboth Beach celebrated New Year’s in London this year. Here they are pictured with Big Ben reading the last bit of news for 2016 from their favorite newspaper.

According to Wikipedia, Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and clock tower as well.

The origin of the nickname Big Ben is subject of some debate. The nickname was applied first to the Great Bell; it may have been named Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation of the Great Bell, or after boxing’s English heavyweight champion Benjamin Caunt.
