Cape Gazette travels to New York to meet April, the ever so popular giraffe

October 27, 2017

In April, Mary Beth Palkon-Krytzer of Milton traveled to Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York. She traveled to New York just to meet April, the very popular giraffe that had the world’s attention for many days as everyone awaited the birth of her calf. Traveling alone over 300-miles each way, Mary Beth went armed with plenty of carrots and her Cape Gazette.

April’s pregnancy was viewed through YouTube live feeds and drew over 14 million viewers on delivery day. She delivered a healthy baby boy calf eventually named Tajiri, a Swahili name meaning hope and confidence, as 1.4 million viewers watched. Tajiri weighed in at 129 pounds and measured almost 6 feet tall. Mary Beth is pictured here with April as she munched on her carrots and smiled for all the Gazette readers to see. Tajiri and his father, Oliver, were also enjoying the sunshine, but never made their way over to say hello.
