Cape girls’ basketball looks forward to 2022-23 season

November 23, 2022

There will be new looks all around for the Cape girls’ basketball team, as senior Ja'Onna Lee is the only member with extensive playing experience returning for the 2022-23 season.

Back from the 18-6 Henlopen Conference Championship squad are Faith Re, Hayden Hudson, Grace Totten and Mya Maull. Added to coach Pat Woods’ varsity squad are Natalya Roundtree, Kayden Borge Williams, Jay'Lyn Slater and freshman Amalia Fruchtman. Senior Megan Smith joins the team to add her 5-foot-11 height and power underneath.

“I’m excited about the season,” said Woods in his fifth year at the helm. “Dover is big and strong, Polytech will be the same way, and Sussex Tech returns everybody. I feel every game is going to be a fight for us.”

The Lady Vikings took top honors in the Henlopen Conference in 2021-22, defeating Lake Forest 45-31 in the Henlopen Conference Championship before downing Red Lion and Delmarva Christian in the DIAA state tournament. They ultimately fell 53-27 to Sanford in the state quarterfinals.

Last season they outscored their opponents 865 to 447, and the team has won 45 consecutive conference games. Their last conference loss was against Polytech in 2019.

Cape will open the season Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Caravel.
