May 6, 2024

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team honored 13 seniors May 3 at Champions Stadium by beating Lake Forest 18-0 to raise its season record to 13-0 with two away games remaining in the regular season.

The Vikings will play at Smyrna (10-2) at 4 p.m., Wednesday May 8, then at Archmere (10-3) at 4:15 p.m., Friday, May 10.

Since beating a solid team from Ocean City, N.J., April 27, the Vikings have run the clock and shutout Sussex Tech 23-0 and Lake Forest 18-0.

Cape’s focus Friday night was to play conservatively after posting a 10-0 first quarter and going spread yellow (delay game) to see if all seniors could ring the bell and enter the scoring column.

Seniors scored 16 of 18 goals which included: Carrie Clausius with three; Anna Lopez, Olivia Burkentine and Anna Sullivan with two each; and Lindsay D’Ambrogi, Lulu Rishko, Grace Wiggins, Hannah Abel, Kathryn Wyshock, Addy Basile and Montana Jones with one apiece. Claire Lopez, a sophomore, and Macy Steinwedel, a junior, also scored for Cape.

Senior Landon Diehl scored a goal that was waved off because it came after she was fouled, resulting in a free position that was not good.

Lexi Nowakowski had ACL surgery and is out for the rest of the season.

Notes: Most teams have played 13 games with two remaining. Cape sits at 13-0, while Tatnall is 12-1. Smyrna, Odessa, Archmere, Caesar Rodney, Caravel and Sussex Academy are all fighting to finish 12-3 and claim one of the top four spots in the postseason. Twelve teams make the DIAA post-season tournament. Play begins Tuesday and Wednesday May 14-15. The top four seeds get a pass in the first round and will all host a game Saturday, May 18. The semifinals are Tuesday, May 21, and finals Thursday, May 23. Sites  or the semis and finals have not been determined. Delaware State University, the venue for the last two championships, is not available for 2024.
