Cape girls’ soccer on verge of history, secures 12th win of campaign
A seven-game win streak culminated with the Cape girls’ soccer team securing its second 9-0 win in a row and third consecutive shutout on Senior Night May 14 against Seaford.
For seniors Charlotte Bjorklund, Nevaeh Landis and Makala VanDrunen, it was a perfect end to their final varsity regular season, as all three scored at least one goal. The victory was the Vikings’ 12th of the season, setting a program record.
“This season was definitely the best season we've had in multiple years because of the chemistry of the girls on and off the field; we had a lot of good friendships and relationships outside the field, and it reflected on our record,” Landis said. “We worked really well together, and we learned how to play all the positions connected. With this game, I think it showed the way we were playing.”
Landis picked up three assists and was the first senior to score after tallies from Ava Brown, Lily Holodick and Lindsay Hassell. Following the senior’s goal, Madelyn Klemkowski struck twice to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead at the break.
Five minutes into the second half, Bjorklund was fouled in the box, but coach Patrick Kilby immediately called on VanDrunen to take the shot from the spot. The senior converted.
“The senior-led leadership was a lot better from when me and Charlotte were freshmen, because we were scared to even talk,” VanDrunen said. “But now, everybody's just happy to be here.”
Bjorklund wrapped up the scoring, first off an assist from Landis, then from VanDrunen to give the senior her first two goals of the season.
“It was easier to communicate with everyone; there was definitely better leadership, not only from the seniors and captains themselves, but also from the freshmen,” Bjorklund said. “They acted right; people actually cared this year.”
Kilby was extremely proud of his three senior captains and believes they are leaving a legacy of success.
“I’ve known those seniors since they were 8 or 9 years old,” he said. “They grew up playing soccer with my daughter, so we've been pretty close for a long time. Those three were culture changers for us; they came in and everything was positive from the start. Positive, but with expectations.”
The 12-3 Vikings were awarded the No. 3 seed in the DIAA Division I state tournament. They will host No. 6 Charter at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 21.
