Cape girls keeps cranking, beat Dover 63-19

February 5, 2020

There was no happy hangover at the Cape Big House Feb. 4, following the Vikings’ emotional win over Conrad the previous Thursday.

The Vikings hit the court full speed against Dover, leading 20-4 at the end of the first quarter, and 44-8 at the half, eventually scoring a 63-19 victory. The win boosted Cape’s overall record to 14-3, while the Senators dropped to 11-5.

“We have players who need minutes on the court, from frontline players like Abbey [Hearn] and Dania [Cannon] along with Lauren [Head] and Ella [Rishko] off the bench,” said coach Pat Woods.

Cape got 22 points from Cannon, while Morgan Mahoney had 12, including a pair of three-pointers. Hearn had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Carlin Quinn snagged 11 rebounds for her second consecutive double-figure rebound game – she had 18 against Conrad. Mehkia Applewhite contributed 10 points.

Point guard Tamyah Jones led Dover with 10 points.

Cape has games remaining at Smyrna and Sussex Central with a Senior Night contest set for Tuesday, Feb. 11, against Milford.

The regular season closes Thursday, Feb. 13, with the first round in the DIAA state tournament set Wednesday, March 4.

Cape will also face Woodbridge in the Henlopen Conference Championship game on a date yet to be determined because Woodbridge still has six regular-season games left to play.

The Cape junior varsity team remained undefeated over two seasons, improving to 12-0, with a 31-15 win over Dover. Leading scorer Akira Perry led the Vikings with 10 points.
