Cape girls rock the Big House; will host CR Tuesday night

Both teams undefeated heading into money game
January 18, 2021

The Cape girls’ basketball team posted an emphatic 63-27 home win over Polytech Jan. 15, coming on the heels of a 77-20 road win at Sussex Tech. That is 140-47 in two games with the game clock running in the second half and the starters sitting in the fourth quarter.

Coach Pat Woods listened to questions after the game and rolled out diplomatic, yet honest answers.

“We need to get pushed if we’re going to make any noise in the postseason,” he said. “We are always playing the game we’re in with an eye toward the better teams in the state. Getting housed in the regular season is not always a bad thing.”

Cape will host undefeated Caesar Rodney at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19. The Riders have wins over Polytech 63-42 and Dover 53-34.

The Vikings are set to play the Riders twice this season, so this is a crucial early game in the quest for a conference championship.

Cape had the triangle offense working against Polytech with Mehkia Applewhite scoring 19 points, Julia Saleur tallying 18 and Morgan Mahoney recording 13.

Lauryn Head scored 10 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds, while Destiny Kusen grabbed eight boards.

Ella Rishko contributed five steals and four assists.

“Last year, we had Dania [Cannon] on the outside and Abbey [Hearn] inside that dominated offensive possessions,” Woods said. “Now we have three options, all of whom can hurt you in different ways.”

Cape will play at Smyrna at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22.
