Cape Henlopen State Park trails impacted by blizzard

Crews continue efforts to ensure trails are safe for visitors across Sussex County parks
March 5, 2026

Some popular trails at Cape Henlopen State Park remain open as Delaware State Parks crews continue their efforts across Sussex County following the recent blizzard that impacted the region. Warmer temperatures forecast for the upcoming week are expected to draw more people outdoors, making trail conditions a key consideration for visitors planning to head out to our favorite local parks.

According to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the bike loop and Gordons Pond Trail at Cape Henlopen State Park are fully open to the public, meaning crews have checked and cleared them of any significant obstructions. DNREC officials say other trails in the park have not yet been fully evaluated or cleared, and some sections may still be impassable.

Elsewhere in Sussex County, several trails at Trap Pond State Park remain closed, including Raccoon Pond Trail, American Holly Trail, Island Trail, Cypress Point Trail and an unnamed connector trail. The Huckleberry Trail is partially closed.

At Delaware Seashore State Park, the Fred Hudson Connector and Assawoman Canal Trail are open to the public.

“We are working hard to get trails open as soon as possible and to make them safe for use,” said Elizabeth Kuhles-Heiney with DNREC.
