Cape High to hold ceremony for Class of 2020

District honors plan to bring class, families together in July 27 event

The Cape Henlopen Class of 2020 will return to their alma mater for a live recognition ceremony at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, at Legends Stadium.

In June 2020, a virtual graduation ceremony was held to celebrate seniors. At the time, school officials said that once COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, the entire class and their families would be celebrated together.

“Now, with the ability to gather together again, we are looking forward to hosting a recognition ceremony for the class of 2020 that will replicate our typical commencement ceremony,” said a district statement issued July 6.

Students from the Class of 2020 are asked to register for the event by Friday, July 16, at tinyurl.com/CelebrateClassof2020. Graduates may request up to eight tickets for friends and family.

The day before last year’s virtual ceremony, the district held the Journey of the Class of 2020 drive-thru experience at Hudson Fields, where photograph signs of each senior lined the route and teachers cheered for graduates as they drove by.

The virtual graduation ceremony featured a traditional graduation program, including valedictorian and class president speeches, and the announcement of graduates. Cape High grad and country music star Jimmie Allen addressed students virtually.

Details of the July 27 ceremony, including whether there will be a keynote speaker, are still being worked out, district officials said.
