Cape High seeks more work-based learning community partners

May 21, 2025

Cape Henlopen High School team members are seeking to expand the work-based learning program, which connects students with local businesses, nonprofits and professionals so they can gain real-world experience while still in school.

The program provides students with valuable opportunities to explore career pathways, build professional skills and apply classroom knowledge in hands-on environments through internships, job shadowing and cooperative learning placements.

“Our goal is to equip students not just for graduation, but for life after high school,” said Kristin DeGregory, Cape High principal. “Work-based learning opens doors to meaningful experiences that help students discover their passions, apply the valuable knowledge they’ve learned and practiced in their classrooms, and feel confident in making informed decisions about their futures.”

The program serves seniors who meet academic and behavioral requirements, offering placements in industries such as healthcare, hospitality, construction, business/marketing, education, skilled trades, IT and public service. Each student is matched with an organization or business and supported by the school’s career counselor, who ensures that both the student and employer have a successful and productive experience.

“This program helps students grow professionally and personally,” said Garnet Rhue, Cape High career counselor. “They’re not just learning about careers; they’re building confidence, communication skills and a sense of purpose.”

Current placements include: Beebe Healthcare; Bayhealth; Atracare; Pivot Physical Therapy; Elite Physical Therapy; Peninsula Orthopedic Associates; Premier Physical Therapy; The Lodge at Historic Lewes; Amazing Grace Farm; Rehoboth Beach Animal Hospital; All Creatures Veterinary Services; University of Delaware marine studies; SoDel Concepts; Community Bank Delaware; Schell Brothers; Monument Sotheby's International Realty, Coastal Division; City of Lewes; GGA Construction; Pilottown Engineering; Delaware State Parks; Key Wealth Financial Advisors; Faw Casson; Davis, Bowen & Friedel; and Brockstedt Mandalas Federico.

Cape High is looking to add additional opportunities for students in fall 2025. Local businesses and organizations interested in partnering or hosting student interns are encouraged to contact the high school guidance office to be a part of shaping tomorrow’s workforce.
