Cape High students take part in Special Olympics campaign

Spread the Word – Inclusion initiative promotes respect, awareness
March 14, 2022

During all three lunches at Cape High March 2, students lined up to sign a banner pledging to promote respect, acceptance and inclusion as part of a Special Olympics Delaware initiative.

As a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, Cape High united with students in schools across the state to take part in the 14th annual Spread the Word – Inclusion campaign.

Over the past 13 years, the Spread the Word campaign has grown from an initiative in a few dozen schools to one of the organization’s most widely used engagement tools, with nearly 10,000 Unified Champion Schools in the country.

Special Olympics Delaware Director of Unified Champion Schools Jon Buzby said the day is an opportunity for students to rally behind the premise that respecting and including individuals of all abilities and backgrounds should remain at the forefront of every action and decision they make every day.

“Fortunately, nowadays the majority of students already respect all of their peers, but the activities on this one day just reinforce for everyone the importance of treating everyone with respect, and the inclusion of all members in school activities and in the local communities,” Buzby said.
