Sherry Harmer, loved animals, nature

January 7, 2026

Sherry (Cheryl J.) Harmer found peace Monday, Dec. 29, 2025. She passed amidst the love and support of her family and community.

Sherry was born in Arden in December 1951, to Earle “Bud” and Ruth Harmer. She attended Arden Montessori School and graduated from Concord High School. In 1987, Sherry moved to Lewes and found her true home. She earned an associate degree in phlebotomy and completed her YTT 200 at Involution Yoga Studio. Sherry made a name for herself in the hospitality industry in Delaware, working for many years at La Rosa Negra and assisting with the opening of Striper Bites in Lewes. She earned a reputation as “an iconic Lewes restaurant server” due to her ability to connect with people, make them feel welcome and provide excellent service.

Sherry is survived by her partner, Steven Kiibler; her daughter, Samantha Buford (Seth); her son, Jamie Kiibler; her sister, Erle Harmer; her nephew, Rick Lee (Lindsay); and grand-nieces Ava Ruth Lee and Nora Lee. She was known as “Little Sherry” by those in her community of support, and everyone who met her loved her unique style, her fiery attitude and her passion to assist those in need (two legs and four).

Many say that Sherry was the person who would always recognize those standing on the fringes and welcome them in, ensuring that no one felt left out. She embraced all of the strays she encountered in life, be they two- or four-legged. She cared deeply for all beings that were cast aside or in need of love. For many years she would open her home to any and all that had no place to go for the holidays.

Sherry was a woman with many passions. She thrifted before it was popular, became a tattoo enthusiast, and was an avid gardener and lover of all things of the natural world. Her happiest moments were at the beach, in nature and digging in her garden. She loved her cats (and every other animal that crossed her path) fiercely. She always took in strays and fed all of the cats, raccoons and foxes in the neighborhoods in which she lived.

Her spirit and sense of humor will be missed by all.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring on the beach, and all are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Humane Animal Partners.
