Gulls and gnats hovered over Champions Stadium Sept. 11, as the Cape Henlopen field hockey team lit up Sussex Tech 10-0. The Vikings are now 4-0, having won those games by a combined 27-0 margin.
Cape’s goalies Isabel Mekulski and Jordynn Bowe have faced only two shots while recording four shutouts.
The Vikings led the Ravens 10-0 at the half. When was all said and done, Cape held a 30-0 advantage in shots on goal and a 14-0 edge in penalty corners for the game.
Cape goal scorers were Emily Wells and Teagan Baker with two goals each, and single goals scored by Mairead Rishko, Avary Miller, Layla Conn, Grace Heers, Atia Sabbagh and Norah Block.
Cape’s offense had totaled eight assists, led by Sabbagh with three, Baker with two and one each from Heers, Makenzie Todd and Wells.
Sussex Tech goalie Angelina Lopez, a freshman, was credited with 20 saves.
The Sept. 11 game began with a moment of silence; the flag was flown at half mast throughout the game.
Cape will host Sussex Central at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, then travel to Tower Hill for a game at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20.
The Cape JV team hosted Indian River prior to the varsity game and battled to a scoreless tie. The Vikings had a 12-2 shots-on-goal advantage with a 12-3 edge in penalty corners.
Indian River goalie Analiese Werner was credited with five saves, while Cape goalie Alexis Puddicombe had one save. The JV team will play at Tower Hill at 12:30 p.m., Sept. 20.
