Cape lacrosse boys ‘don’t play,’ waxing Dover 16-4
The 8-2 Dover Senators hosted the Cape boys lacrosse team last Friday night, April 30, riding the high of a Wednesday night 10-9 overtime win over rival Caesar Rodney. The come-from-behind shocker was the first and only lacrosse win for Dover over CR in the 14-year history of the Senators program.
But Cape brought its “holy cow” game to a Dover field where the team has won two state championships and lit up the scoreboard for a dozen first-half goals for a 12-1 halftime lead. The Vikings cruised home for a 16-4 victory to go 9-2 on the season. Cape will play at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, May 4.
Cape’s scoring was paced by Andrew Scrutchfield 5, Dan Steele 4, Chris Woodruff 2, John Young 2 and single goals from Aaron Tartal, Mark Tappan and Jesse Gilman. Assists leaders were Dan Steele 2, Aaron Tartal, Clay Nelson, Mark Tappan and Chris Woodruff. Dover goals came from Cody Palmer 2, Josh Martin and Matt Towne.
The Vikings received strong midfield play from Matt Millman and Jerome Johnson and stellar long-pole defense from Jake Mathews, Tim Voss, Dom Prestipino and Josh Byrd.
Cape outshot the Senators 44-15. James Cook of Cape was credited with 9 saves while Brandon Eubanks of Dover had 12.
