Cape preschoolers jump into 500 Book Challenge

October 16, 2019

Little Vikings Preschool students in the classroom of Amanda Cordrey, Charity Elliott and Denise Moore have jumped into the American Reading Company’s 500 Book Challenge with enthusiam.

The challenge is part of the company’s early literacy curriculum specific to prekindergarten students. Its goal is not only to maximize the effectiveness of the school’s reading curriculum but to develop avid, lifelong readers. The program is also designed to help teachers and parents dramatically improve the reading and language experiences of all preschool students.

Carefully selected collections of high-quality, multicultural books provide opportunities for classroom read-alouds and student pretend reading. The program encourages thinking and talking about books every day, and reading at home every night.

“It is the hope that by participating in ARC’s 500 Book Challenge, students will have exposure to 1,000 books by the start of kindergarten,” said Cordrey. “This is Little Vikings’ second year of involvement with the ARC curriculum’s 500 Book Challenge, and it has become a big part of the students’ preparation for entering kindergarten.”

Students also have loved being given a voice and choice on the books that they select to read. It’s safe to say that “Peppa Pig” has been a big hit in their classrooms.
