Cape rocks total team effort, beats Wilmington Friends 16-7

Vikings play Sallies Saturday at 2 p.m. for state championship

Cape lacrosse coach Mark D’Ambrogi was reflectively happy after the game, pensively looking down as things were looking up after Cape dismantled and dominated previously unbeaten Wilmington Friends 16-7 in the semifinals of the DIAA lacrosse tournament.

The Vikings will play Salesianum at Dover High School at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 3, for the state championship.

“It was a total team effort on our part, from the goalie to attack and the midfielders in between,” D’Ambrogi said. “Ian Zolper, Timmy Kelley and Dillon Mocci were picking up ground balls off the face-off and that’s when we started to roll.”

Jaycob Trimmer had a first-half hat trick, leading Cape to a 6-3 halftime lead, while Erik-Stephane Stancofski ripped four second-half goals to propel Cape to a dominating performance and a berth in the finals.

Goalie Brendan Kane should have worn a question mark on his jersey because he was the riddle the Quakers could not solve. Time and again, Kane made point-blank saves not falling for the deke before the dunk.

“We worked on that all week,” said goalie coach Geoff Shupard. “Friends looks for cutters, and they are great at putting shooters right in your face. Brendan was laser-locked in the entire game - he was incredible.”

Cape blew the game open with a 5-1 third period, leading 11-4 entering the final frame. Nine different players scored for Cape in the game with Luke D’Ambrogi contributing three assists. The Vikings outshot Friends 36-25.

“Friends is a team of good lacrosse players,” D’Ambrogi said. “During the season, they beat CR, Archmere and Cape. They came back and got us at their place, but tonight we just kept up the pressure and pace.”

Goal scorers for Cape were Stancofski with four, Trimmer with three, Ethan Ghabra and Brock Maloomian with two each, and single goals from Evan Gehman, Luke D’Ambrogi, Greg Boyce and Brooks Buck.

Friends goals came from Matt Tornek with three and Eric Pincus, River Harper, Zach Cutler and Nat Ruhl with one apiece.

Freshman Jackson Skinner had six saves for Friends, while Kane was credited with 10.
