Cape soccer hosts 19-team play day

Young players still learning tactical concepts
August 25, 2025

Nineteen boys’ soccer teams from Delaware and Maryland competed in an Aug. 23 play day on the Cape campus.

Participating Delaware teams were Sussex Central, Brandywine, Red Lion, Caesar Rodney, Delcastle, Indian River, Milford, St. Georges Tech, Sallies, Sanford and Newark Charter. Maryland schools in attendance were Kent Island, Easton, Mt. St. Joseph, The Heights School, Parkside, Stephen Decatur and Sts. Peter & Paul.

“After falling 1-0 in our scrimmage last week against Tower Hill, we found areas to improve,” said senior Lawson Whaley. “We worked on and executed those plans in today's scrimmages. We are looking forward to the season ahead.”

Cape assistant coach Steve Kilby said there is a mix of youth within the team.

“The younger players have some great ability, but are struggling a bit with understanding some of the tactical concepts in training,” he said. “This past week prior to this play day really paid off, as they were able to execute a lot of the things we worked on.”

Cape scrimmages at Sussex Academy Wednesday, Aug. 27, before opening the regular season Saturday, Sept. 6, at home against Odessa.
