October 27, 2023

The Cape soccer team did it again in overtime. Senior Jack Schell booted a golden goal past Sussex Central goalkeeper Justin Glasco with two minutes left in the second overtime period to lift the Vikings to a 3-2 win over the 9-2-3 Northern Division champions.

The Vikings took just one shot more than the Knights, but it came at the right time. Cape improves to 12-2 on the season.

Cape’s other goals were scored by Cardin Benjamin off an assist by Schell and Collin Siviels off an assist from Trent Kauffman. Both goals came in the first half.

The win was the Vikings’ fourth overtime victory in the last five games.

“I’m super proud of the guys showing the level of fortitude that they have shown this season in overtime games,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We are now 5-0 in overtime games, which bodes well as the state tournament is on the horizon. It only helps our level of experience in close matches. I’m very happy that Jack Schell was able to get the game winner. He’s been working so hard this season, as his statistics are not what they were last season, but he does a lot of hard work behind the scenes that does not get recognized in the stat book.”

Cape will wrap up the regular season Thursday, Nov. 2, at Laurel (5-7-1).
