May 26, 2023

The Cape softball team’s season came to an end May 25, with a 6-1 loss to Indian River in the second round of the state tournament.

After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, IR got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. IR added five more runs before Cape got its only score.

“We played them two weeks ago in a heck of a game that went extra innings,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “The girls know each other through travel ball and stuff like that. And you know we’re just over the bridge. I say IR is on their side of the bridge and Cape is up here. It’s a natural rivalry.”

Indian River pitcher Kinsley Hall went the distance, allowing five hits and one run. She struck out nine batters and walked just one.

Cape’s Ava Simeone went 2-for-3 with the team’s lone RBI. Hayden Hudson, Bri Windish and Ava Calciano each went 1-for-3.

The Vikings end the season with a 12-7 record, including winning their first state tournament game since 2005.

No. 6 Indian River advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 win over No. 3 Sussex Central in the quarterfinals May 27.
