Cape swimming defeats IR on Senior Night

February 5, 2024

The Cape swim teams celebrated their Class of 2024 swimmers Feb. 2, with a 115-52 boys’ victory and a 92-78 girls’ win over Indian River at the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center in Georgetown. The boys are 11-1, while the girls are 12-0.

Indian River also celebrated its seniors.

“I think it was definitely our most challenging meet this season,” said Cape senior Kayla Droge. “It’s nice to have a team to push us to our limits. It’s crazy to see what we can accomplish with a little extra pressure. Plus, meets where the score is close always make faster times.”

“I’m very happy with how the team swam today,” said senior Brian Fleming. “A lot of season [personal records] were made, and the 200 medley relay team got a new school record.”

“Indian River is always a challenge,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “They are a well-coached team and we have to be prepared. I thought our kids did a nice job tonight. It is great to swim at [Sussex Academy] because it allows us to get times on all of our swimmers. With the end of the season rapidly approaching, the competition within our own program for our conference and state team is fierce. This is a really exciting time of the year.”
