Cape swimming sinks Lake

Vikings to host IR Tuesday

The Vikings met the Spartans in the pool of battle Jan. 17 at the Sussex Family YMCA, and when the waves settled, the boys moved to 6-1-1 in a 125-42 victory, while the girls the swam to a 124-46 win, moving them to 5-3.

The Cape girls’ squad won every event of the meet, scoring 124 points.

Cape’s Sophie Schoenfeld, Amaya Daisey, Erin Morrissey and Madelyn McGreevy won the medley relay in 2:12.97. Heidi Simmons took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:20.31. Amaya Daisey won the 200 individual medley in 2:34.64. The 50 freestyle was won by Gabriella Robertson in 28.97. Amaya Daisey took the 100 butterfly in 1:10.09. Aya Daisey won the 100 freestyle in 57.69. Erin Morrissey captured the 500 free in 6:38.38. The 200 free relay team of Olivia Brozefsky, Lindsay Rambo, Lindsey Reynolds and Amaya Daisey won in 1:57.75. Aya Daisey won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.10. Gianna Vayda took first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.23.  Melanie Fritchman, Sophie Schoenfeld, Hadley Rhue and Molly Mendes placed first in the 400 free relay in 4:51.53.

“We go into every meet with the same mentality – winning,” said Vayda. “And we did just that. Our team has such great sportsmanship, which always benefits us. We all supported each other and swam our best.”

“Our team has been working very hard this season," said Schoenfeld. "We do our best at every meet. We swam pretty well, and our times have shown our improvement.”

The boys’ squad took first in 10 of 11 events.

“It was important to rebound after a tough loss last week,” said senior James Heid. “We came together and had a great team effort.”

The 200 medley relay team of Thomas Weeks, Marcus Gromofsky, Josh Toback and Dylan Kaplan won in 1:52.38. James Heid won the 200 freestyle in 2:05.62. Marcus Gromofsky won the 200 individual medley in  2:26.22. Josh Toback won the 50 free in  23.35. Thomas Weeks won the 100 fly in 1:01.12. Josh Toback took first in the 100 freestyle in 50.72. Ryan Bixler took the 500 in 5:32.68. Marcus Gromofsky, James Heid, Dylan Kaplan and Josh Toback took the  200 free relay at 1:35.09. Marcus Gromofsky won the 100 backstroke with 1:07.58. The 100 breaststroke was won by Bryan White from Lake Forest in 1:16.03. Cape’s Thomas Taylor, Adam Gorecki, Liam Leishear and Finn Forcucci took the 400 free relay in 4:29.60.

“We always aspire to keep the same energy for every meet as if it is the most important meet of the season,” said Bixler.

“I thought Lake had some good swimmers who can score at conferences,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “I was pleased with our effort, especially after the tough losses against Tech. We had a tough week of practice, and the team was focused on getting better.”

Cape will host Indian River Tuesday, Jan. 22.
