Cape volleyball looking forward to season

August 16, 2019

The Cape volleyball squad is taking its 2019 preseason very seriously, as the Lady Vikings look to improve on their 10-7 campaign in 2018.

Sallies and West Chester grad Tyler Coupe is back for his fifth season as head coach. He’s looking for the intensity and skill to move up in the state tournament.

”We had 42 girls try out this year, which is a great sign of what we have coming,” said Coupe. “We’re excited for the challenges ahead. We had a successful season last year, which we’re hoping to capitalize on going forward with a good amount of returning players with starting experience. There’s a lot of new talent in the gym, and I think that’s healthy and beneficial, because they are pushing the veterans. I think many of them are vying for spots and want to prove they’re ready to push this program to the next level.”

The Lady Vikings return five seniors in Simran Patel, Abbey Derrickson, Teaghan Van Brunt, Annabelle Burrows and Taylor Iacono.

“We have a lot of talent out for the team this year,” Derrickson said. “I think this season will be pretty good for us. We made the second round of the state tournament last year, and there is no reason this team can’t go even further.”

“We have a lot of good players,” Patel said. “As long as everyone tries their hardest and puts out 110 percent, we’ll do well.”

Cape will travel to Wilmington Friends Wednesday, Aug. 21, for its first scrimmage, then return to the Cape gymnasium for a play day Saturday, Aug. 24, with Delaware Military Academy, Ursuline, Wilmington Friends School and St. Georges Tech, among others.
