Cape volleyball suffers first loss of season, dropping 3-0 to Eagles
The Cape Henlopen volleyball team fell to 4-1 on the season with a 3-0 loss to visiting Smyrna Sept. 22. The 4-2 Eagles swept the Vikings 25-9, 25-16 and 25-16.
Sarah Tappan and Izzie Marsico led the Vikings with a stellar defensive game with 11 and 8 digs, respectively. Cameron Wick spiked down 6 kills and blocked 5 Smyrna kill attempts in the match. Alison Palmer played a consistent game having 3 kills, 3 blocks, 5 digs and 4 assists.
"Smyrna outplayed us in every facet of the game," said Cape head coach Carrie Evick. "I don't think we had a game time mind-set. They [Smyrna] are a good team.
"We played a little timid," said junior middle hitter Cameron Wick. "We have to play more relaxed. Our serve receive did real well, though."
Smyrna teamed for 22 kills and 22 assists in the victory.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
