Cape volleyball tames Wildcats 3-0

October 10, 2019

The Vikings volleyball squad traveled to Delmar Oct. 8 and returned to Lewes with a 25-17, 25-22 and 25-17 victory over the Wildcats.

Katie Knarr, Simran Patel, and Bre and Angelica Kusen teamed for 23 kills in the match. Abbey Derrickson and Alyssa Whaley assisted on 18 points. Emily Lamb, Jocelyn Leach, Knarr and Rileigh Wilson bumped 19 digs.

“I think if we just keep working hard as a team and execute how we have been the past two weeks, I think we’ll be okay,” Knarr said. “I think we need the confidence and the heart and just give it all we’ve got no matter who we are playing. At some points, we took this match too lightly, but coach always tells us to play like we’re playing the best team in the state. We have to continue with that confidence.”

“I’m happy to walk out with the win,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “I’m not particularly pleased with our overall play. We made way too many unforced errors. What’s most disheartening is how lackadaisical we looked and the lack of fire or passion we had just going through the motions of it’s another day, and that’s not how we approach our game or how we play our game. We’ve got to regroup. Delmar played a great defensive game. They kept a lot of balls up and they forced us to be smart hitters, and I don’t think we always were. We kept making the same swings and the same hits to the same spots and the same players. We have to be a much less predictable team to have success. To see that many errors is unacceptable.”

“We need to communicate a lot better as a team,” Whaley said. “I think that’s where we are struggling the most.”

The Cape junior varsity squad moved to 5-5 with a 2-0 win over the Wildcats JV.

Cape was set to face the Bucs Thursday, Oct. 10 at Milford.
