Cape wins field hockey state title

Eighth title in nine years for Vikings

The Cape Henlopen High School field hockey team won its third straight DIAA Division I state championship Nov. 16, with a 2-0 win over Padua Academy at Sussex Academy in Georgetown. 

Noelle Sabbagh broke the scoreless tie with 12:51 left in the game. Sam Connors added an insurance goal late in the game. 

The championship is Cape’s eighth in nine years and seventh under coach Kate Austin. Cape also won championships in 1979 with coach Carolyn Ivins, 1995 with coach Ruth Skoglund and 2011 with coach Nicole Catanzaro Hughes.  

The Division II championship game between Delmar and Indian River is about to get underway at Sussex Academy.
