Cape wins first boys’ lacrosse title in 1998

Last week’s historic photograph featured a number of local people on the Delaware Lacrosse Club team in the late 1970s. The same can be said about this week’s photograph, which shows Cape Henlopen High School’s first state championship boys’ lacrosse team from 1998. The squad, coached by Steve Aubrey, capped an undefeated season with a 14-3 drubbing of Tatnall in the championship game. It was the realization of a dream that began 20 years earlier when Lou Norbeck and Milt Roberts brought the sport to Cape.
Since that first state title, Cape won it again in 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2014 and 2019. The 1998 roster features many names still with the program, including head coach Geoff Shupard, who was a player on the roster. Mark D’Ambrogi, who was the head coach for five Cape titles, was an assistant coach on the 1998 team.
The 2026 edition of the Cape lacrosse team will kick off its season Wednesday, March 25, at Milford.
