Cape wrestling defeats Dover 42-24

Vikings are 10-1 on the season
January 26, 2017

After an embarrassing 47-13 loss to Smyrna last week, the Cape Henlopen wrestling team bounced back to defeat the Senators 42-24 Jan. 25 at Dover.

Vikings wrestlers earning wins were Anthony Caruso with a forfeit at 120, Max Norquest at 132, Vinnie Diego at 138, Dante Jaquet at 152, Cory Lawson at 160, Chris Handlin at 170 and Brock Maloomian at 182. Holden Kammerer picked up a forfeit at 195 before Zack Flores finished the match with a decision at 285.

Zeke Bean was forced to default with an injury at 145.

“I thought we rebounded really well,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “We had a rough outing last week, and it’s how you respond. Our kids had a great few days of practice last week and the beginning of this week. We responded by taking it to Dover. We dominated the whole match, and if we finished the match at 145 (Bean’s injury) it would have been even more lopsided. Our guys wrestled really well.”

One of the most exciting matches came in the 138-pound matchup between Cape’s Vinnie Diego and Dover’s Anthony Fisher.

“Vinnie wrestled great,” said Mattioni. “Fisher defeated the defending state champ, so Vinnie is in good position right now.”

The Vikings moved to 10-1 on the season, while Dover is 8-3.

Cape will host Sanford Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m.
