As part of restructuring its business model, the Capital One Bank in Rehoboth Beach will close for good Friday, May 19.

Many local Capital One customers received a letter announcing the closure in February. According to the letter, customer accounts will not be affected by the change.

“We understand that this news may be disappointing – please know that we did not make this decision lightly,” said the Feb. 18 letter.

In an email March 4, Derek Conrad, Capital One spokesperson, said the bank is making the change because customers’ preferences and how they manage their money are changing. He said Capital One’s banking model is balancing digital and in-person options to align with customer behavior.

“The banking industry’s delivery model is being reshaped in response to customer demand, and Capital One is also evolving to address that need,” said Conrad.

Conrad said Capital One’s customers are more and more banking online. There continues to be steady growth in mobile banking, online banking, enhanced ATMs and remote deposit, he said.

Conrad said Capital One recognizes the importance of ensuring that the evolution of banking doesn’t inadvertently leave someone behind. He said the bank believes digital products and tools can provide a more tailored, personal and accessible service for customers.

“Our goal is to deliver a compelling and optimal customer experience across all channels, not just one,” said Conrad.

Conrad said there are 37 branches closing nationwide as part of this change. The Rehoboth branch is the only one closing in Delaware, he said.
