Catholic Charities receives $28,000 grant from Walmart Foundation

To provide help with SNAP
March 22, 2015

Catholic Charities Inc. of the Diocese of Wilmington has received a grant in the amount of $28,000 from the Walmart Foundation. This grant, provided through Catholic Charities USA, will enable Catholic Charities to expand its efforts throughout Delaware and the nine counties of the Eastern Shore of Maryland to educate families about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and provide eligible families with enrollment assistance.

According to data from Foodshare, SNAP is one of the most effective and efficient ways to end hunger. This critical program provides many needy individuals with the ability to provide nutritious and healthy meals to their families. Unfortunately, a large number of families eligible for this benefit are not aware of this critical resource.

More than 35 percent of the Diocese of Wilmington households are eligible for SNAP benefits. Support from the Walmart Foundation will help Catholic Charities enroll all eligible households through outreach and enrollment assistance.

Catholic Charities, the charitable arm of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, in 2015 celebrates its 185th anniversary of serving those in need. The agency offers a wide range of services to strengthen families, care for children, assist the disadvantaged, and build human relationships throughout Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Each year, the agency serves over 100,000 individuals. For more information about Catholic Charities, go to www.cdow.org/charities.html.
