Chad Carroll from Big Sky Country wins Santa Sprint 5K in Dewey

Runners survive tumble-dry heat and stale air

Chad Carroll, 43, came from Big Sky Country in Bozeman, Mont., to the Atlantic Ocean for vacation and won the Santa Sprint 5K July 20 in sizzling conditions in a time of 17:16. 

A total of 174 runners completed the race. 

Allison Myers, 17,  of Dallastown, Pa., was the first woman and fourth overall in a time of 20:04. Allison’s dad, John Myers, 48, won the male masters in 21:31, while Susan Dunn, 42, of Laurel, won the female masters in 22:21. 

The top 5 on the male leaderboard following Carroll were Mike Marciano in 19:26, John Tower Jr. in 19:45, Tim Craven in 20:16 and Marvin Herrera in 20:35. 

Joining Myers on the leaderboard were Allison Shaw in 20:34, Tara Chillingworth in 21:23, Dunn in 22:21 and Katrina Stanislaw in 23:05. 

Notable male age-group winners include 9-and-under, Gabriel Salvador of Oakland, Calif., 29:16; 10-13, Camcen Taylor, 10, of Ventura, Calif., 21:13; 25-29, Nick Prestipino, 21:05; 30-34, Mike Marciano, 19:26; 35-39, Tim Craven, 20:16; 65-69, Rick Poppleton, 22:25; 70-74, Jules Woodall, 26:48; 75-79, Bernie Gallagher, 28:37; 80 and over, John Neal, 46:22. 

Notable female age group winners include 25-29, Caroline Welden, 23:12; 35-39, Holly Barila, 25:29; 45-49, Jen Perry, 25:30; 50-54, Mardiny Ung, 23:12; 55-59, Shelly Murray, 27:42; 60-64, Lynn Welden, 28:05; 65-69, Linda Ridenour, 30:11; 70-74, Sharyn Slick, 41:25. 

States represented in the race included Montana, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, California, Wyoming, Georgia, New York, Texas, Colorado, Ohio, Virginia and South Carolina. 

The next local Races2Run event is the Penn State Day 5K Sunday, July 26, at Northbeach in Dewey, 125 McKinley Ave. on the bay.
