CHEER honors Korean War veterans

April 22, 2024

CHEER Inc. recently held a breakfast and dedication ceremony for two commemorative benches in front of the CHEER Community Center in Georgetown.

The metal benches on a concrete patio and a bronze plaque describing the site were made possible by a generous gift from the Korean War Veterans Chapter 1 of Sussex County.

Wording cut out of the back of one bench says, “Remember All Who Served” and the wording on the other states “Korean War 1950-1953.” The Korean War was the fifth-deadliest war in U.S. history and has often been referred to as The Forgotten War.

Three presidents of the chapter were in attendance at the dedication: Past President Walter Koopman, Past President Ed Johnson, who traveled up from Florida for the occasion, and current President Jack McKinley. Korean War Marine veteran Tom Terrell and several other military veterans from Sussex County also attended.

A bronze plaque was erected at the site that states: “This memorial is donated by the Korean War Veterans Chapter 1 of Sussex County, DE. A gift to the cherished seniors of CHEER. It stands as a reminder of the freedom our brave veterans valiantly secured for us, a freedom we hold dear. May this place offer peace and refection to all who visit. We extend our deepest gratitude and God’s blessings to all who gave so much to defend our liberty. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends – John 15:13.”
