CHEER seeks volunteers to deliver food boxes June 6

June 1, 2020

CHEER Inc. team members are proud it is the nonprofit agency in Delaware to partner with the USDA in the Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program.

The USDA is exercising authority under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to purchase and distribute agriculture products to those in need. CHEER will package Farmers to Families food boxes, then deliver them to Sussex County seniors in need Saturday, June 6. The boxes will include assorted fresh produce, pork products, cheese products and milk.

Delivery volunteers are needed to come to the Georgetown CHEER Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., June 6 and drive to the check-in area. Boxes will be placed in the trunk or back seat of  volunteers’ vehicles, and the driver will be given a route sheet with the names, addresses and phone numbers of four different seniors to whom they will deliver the food boxes. Directions to the houses will be included. There will also be a CHEER contact number to call to ask any questions.

Masks, sanitizers and gloves will be available if needed.

Volunteers will leave the check-in point and drive to each designated senior’s home. Organizers recommend calling the clients on the way to their homes so they know the food boxes are coming. This will allow deliveries to go more smoothly since recipients will be anticipating volunteers’ arrival.

Following COVID-19 pandemic protocol, volunteers will place the boxes at the door, knock on the door, and move back 6 feet, wave to the client and wish them well, then proceed to the next address on the list.

For more information, interested volunteers may call Elizabeth Walls at 302-515-3040 or email Biffy@cheerde.com.
