Chesapeake and Maine chef to demo at Sept. 16 farmers market

September 14, 2023

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is set for 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, at George H.P. Smith Park on the corner of Dupont and Johnson avenues, Lewes.

At 10 a.m. in the demo tent, chef Jordan Drew from Chesapeake and Maine will be representing the Dogfish family with a great demonstration of their oyster program. He will be presenting three different oysters: Arrowhead, Orchard Point and one variety from Maine, plus SeaQuench mignonette and a golden beet cocktail sauce. It’s Delaware meets Maine, with some delicious sampling to boot.

Customers will find fresh ginger and lemongrass, special apple ciders, figs, pears, freshly picked apples, a variety of sweet carrots, new lettuces, broccoli, lima beans, beets, fall potatoes, green beans, haricots verts, multicolored pole beans, shallots, garlic, Japanese cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, sweet corn, eggplants, arugula, kale, pork sausages, chops and ribs, hamburger and all cuts of beef, free-range chicken, oysters, hand-picked crab meat, crab soups, different honey varieties including butter bean, mushrooms, eggs, yogurt, milk, butter, ice cream, kombucha, jams, fresh-baked breads, apple-cider donuts, pastries made with fruit from market vendors, cut-flower bouquets, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, cold-pressed juices made from local fruits and vegetables and more.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is producer-only, so customers are able to buy directly from the farmers who grew the produce.

There is limited parking available at the Lewes Elementary School parking lot and there is an opening to the park near the pole barn, where a slight slope leads to the market. Walking or biking to the market is encouraged for those who are able. Thanks to Beebe Healthcare, there is also parking at the hospital’s rear outdoor parking lot right next to a park entrance.

Dogs at the markets must be under control on a 6-foot, nonretractable leash to ensure the safety of all.

For a list of all vendors, their contact information and whether they take preorders, go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org. Customers will pick up preorders at the vendor tent in the market.

The market processes payments from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Women, Infants and Children Program benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.

The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from growers at the market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including Epworth United Methodist Church and Casa San Francisco. The market team thanks customers for their generosity.

Go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org to see parking and vendor information with maps. The market’s weekly newsletter lists demos and more; email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org or call 302-644-1436 to be added to the list.

The market thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2023 HLFM Market Champion, and all other sponsors for their continued support.
