Chester Allen Mitchell, retired contractor

Chester Allen Mitchell, 90, of Frankford passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2019, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes.

He was born Oct. 28, 1929, son of the late John Mitchell and the late Della (Melson) Mitchell.  Chester owned and operated Chester A. Mitchell Contractor/Builder for over 60 years, building homes throughout Sussex County.  

Chester enjoyed gardening and sold potted plants as a side hobby until the last few years.  He was a hard worker and always wanted to stay busy.  Chester also had the musical ability to play almost any stringed instrument by ear.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Marguerite “Maggie” Mitchell in 2018; a brother, Raymond “Fuzzy” Mitchell; and a sister, Della Mae Jones.  He is survived by a son, Leroy Mitchell of Frankford; two grandsons, David Mitchell and his wife Michelle of Dagsboro, and Jerry Mitchell and his wife Laura of Dagsboro; three great-grandchildren, Desmond Mitchell and his wife Sara of Dagsboro, Dillon Mitchell of Dagsboro and Kase Mitchell of Dagsboro; a sister, Louise Merritt; and a close cousin, Harvey Melson of Clarksville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 6, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m.  Interment will follow at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville.
