I’m usually a volunteer and not used to being one benefitting from the kindness of others, until this Christmas. I participate in Harbour Lights CHEER Center in Lewes as a widowed senior for the benefit of a reasonably priced hot lunch on my fixed income and, more importantly, for socialization, which is so important to seniors.
This year, with a broken refrigerator (ordered but waiting for delivery and a loaner in the garage) and a back that has decided to act up which has limited my mobility, when the offer for a delivered hot meal on Christmas Day was an option, I swallowed my pride and signed up.
Imagine my delight when Barbara Powell and her daughter Rhianna showed up at my door just before lunch. I knew them and they knew me since they volunteer at my local CHEER. Besides their wonderful company, they brought presents, my meal (a complete turkey dinner), fruit, snacks and even a handmade Christmas card from Emiliano from the local elementary school!
I’d watched Christmas Eve mass at St. Edmond on livestream since I no longer drive at night, but discussing it with Barbara while Rhianna played with my cat — well, I certainly no longer felt alone! It was a real blessing!
Thank you, CHEER, for offering this service to seniors in the area, and thank you to all the volunteers who give up part of their Christmas Day, and thank you to Sussex County for subsidizing the efforts which bring joy and assistance to so many.
