Property owner has no immediate plans
September 23, 2021

Citizens Bank will close its branch on Second Street in Lewes this November.

The closure was confirmed by the bank’s corporate team.

“We continue to evaluate, evolve and adjust our branch strategy across our network, and can confirm that we have decided to close our Lewes branch,” said Bennett Griesmer, a media relations specialist with the bank.

The bank will close Nov. 18, Griesmer said. Customers will continue to be served through neighboring branches and ATMs, including one in Henlopen Plaza, about 2.5 miles away at 34161 Citizen Drive, Lewes.

At mayor and city council’s Sept. 13 regular meeting, City Manager Ann Marie Townshend said the city has reached out to the property owner to inquire if there are plans for the parcel. Townshend said the owner does not have any immediate plans.

According to Sussex County tax records, the property is owned by KD 131 2nd Street LLC of Bethesda, Md.

Citizens Bank has operated at the corner of Second and Bank streets since 2001. Prior to that, the bank tenant was the now-defunct Mellon Bank.

For many years, the bank’s courtyard has been home to Santa’s house during the holiday season. The bank’s front window is also frequently used to display local art.
