Clawdia the Crab selected as new Rehoboth library mascot
Just before summer break, Rehoboth Elementary School students were invited to imagine and create a new ocean-themed mascot for the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, located on Rehoboth Avenue. Designs could depict real sea creatures like seahorses or sharks, or mythical creatures like mermaids.
Of the hundreds of student entries submitted, 10 finalists were selected by judges at the Rehoboth Art League, with two designs chosen from each grade level. These final designs were reviewed by Rehoboth librarians and a representative from the Village Improvement Association, who selected Clawdia the Crab as the library’s new official mascot.
During an evening ceremony, Lauren McCauley, director of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, announced Mia Barnes was the student artist who designed the little crab with a big love for reading. She congratulated all the finalists and thanked them for coming up with ideas to spotlight their community library. All of the finalists’ mascot designs will be displayed at the library throughout June.
“We are incredibly proud of Mia for using her creativity and artistic talent to make such a meaningful contribution to our community,” said Dr. Doris Person, Rehoboth Elementary School principal. “To see her design, Clawdia the Crab, as the new face of the public library is a true testament to the power of student voice and imagination. We can’t wait to see the mascot come to life and inspire readers of all ages.”
The library intends to integrate its new mascot into promotional materials and décor following its upcoming renovation.
Another competition involving students from Beacon Middle School will eventually be held to design the mascot for a second, future Rehoboth library to be located on Warrington Road. By encouraging children to dream up their new mascot, the educators and librarians of Rehoboth Beach hope to demonstrate how their community celebrates creative, innovative ideas and to encourage kids to participate in imagining the future.
